The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) says its employees on Thursday opened a case of theft against a former board member for allegedly stealing laptops earmarked for under-resourced schools in the Eastern Cape.
The board member, who was leading the scheme’s delegation, is accused of keeping 10 laptops instead of delivering them to the already identified schools during a donation drive in March.
Nsfas said 30 laptops were earmarked for distribution to six high schools, with each meant to receive five laptops for communal use.
Prof Hlengani Mathebula, the scheme’s administrator, said he had confidence in the police to ensure a speedy investigation.
He said he was pleased that employees chose to pursue justice on behalf of the voiceless pupils, as criminality can only thrive when witnesses turn a blind eye.
“Children from impoverished backgrounds need all the help they can get from all of us. It is therefore appalling to learn that someone [allegedly] used his position of privilege, being a board member, to steal from the same needy children. It doesn’t get worse than that,” Mathebula said.
